My Child Keeps Lying. How do I Put Stop To It?

First be cool. Because this issue is crucial in children's life and it has to be handled carefully. As parents, we need to remember these two things:
1. Young children don’t easily understand the difference between truth and fantasy or a lie.
2.  They also do not usually realize the affect of telling the truth and telling a lie in real life.

Hence in order to stop your children from lying, you need to emphasize the importance and benefits of speaking truth. Here are some steps you can take:
  • Emphasize the importance of truth:
Tell your children gently, but firmly, that they should ALWAYS speak truth no matter what. Further reinforce the importance of speaking truth by explaining the benefits your child will get by it.

For example: People who speak truth are always respected and loved. They are trusted by everyone. They make good friends easily. By speaking truth they will be safe as they will always be right.

  • If possible give example of any relative or friend who is known as trustworthy. Children understand real-life example better. Also explain the effect of lying. A lie gets caught either today or tomorrow. People hate liars. As an example, ask your children how they will feel if their friends lie to them? People distance themselves from such liars. Hence explain that your children will not get good friends if they keep lying. And you will also be very hurt with their behavior.

  • Start emphasizing the importance of truth at early age to your children. Also to build strong, truthful character in your children, you need to watch over them consistently. Because children do not follow rules consistently. So whenever they slip up, bring them back on the track gently but firmly by asking them to apologies for their lie and correct anything wrong they may have done. Also, set good example by being truthful with your children.
